To Our Readers

June 27, 2025 marks the first International Deafblind Awareness Day, as well as the birthday of educator and disability rights advocate Helen Keller, who was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. This June, we reflect on this meaningful occasion and highlight the needs of people who are deafblind.

While Helen Keller is widely known, this issue’s cover figure, Dr. Cyril Axelrod, is less familiar. As the world’s first deafblind priest, he faced great challenges yet continued to move forward. Despite losing both hearing and sight, he dedicated his life to serving deaf and deafblind communities worldwide. In Chinese communities, he promoted communication, education, and inclusion, embodying resilience and hope.

This issue also features Mr. Wan-go H. C. Weng (翁萬戈), a Chinese American art historian and cultural advocate who devoted his life to preserving and promoting Chinese art and heritage.

Through this issue, we hope to raise awareness of vulnerable communities around the world and encourage greater understanding, compassion, and inclusion, turning empathy into meaningful action.
