The world welcomes a new year. Looking back on 2025: the war in Ukraine continues, peace has yet to return to Israel and Gaza, the abduction of schoolgirls in northern Nigeria persists, tensions remain along the Thailand–Cambodia border, and conflict in Myanmar shows no sign of abating. The world remains turbulent. At the same time, artificial intelligence continues to advance rapidly, prompting us to reflect: What do we hope for in the future, and what can we contribute today? Looking back on Chinese America magazine’s journey in 2025, we are deeply grateful to readers, contributors, and cover figures whose stories reveal the resilience and perseverance of the Chinese spirit.

Today, the global Chinese community spans many countries, facing diverse circumstances and challenges. According to the latest statistics, approximately 50 million people of Chinese descent live worldwide, including first-, second-, third-, and later generations. The largest overseas populations are concentrated in Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. From the ancient Silk Road to the Maritime Silk Road, Chinese migration extended as far as Africa, with Central, South, and Southeast Asia forming thriving, interconnected communities.

This issue’s cover figure, Provost and Senior Vice President Dr. William Tong, was born in Myanmar. Though educated in the West from an early age, he has maintained a deep love for Chinese culture and a lifelong passion for learning. He has advanced research in chemistry while applying his expertise to the humanities and arts, making significant contributions. He also became the first Chinese American to serve as Provost and Senior Vice President at San Diego State University since its founding in 1897. His remarkable story opens the pages of WeChinese America magazine for 2026.
