★在艱難歲月中成長     從少女模特兒到世界舞台

1931年，卡門出生於美國紐約市。她的童年曾經歷家庭經濟困難，人生並非一路順遂。卡門原本夢想成為芭蕾舞者，卻因健康問題不得不放棄，轉而尋找人生的新方向。1946年，在前往芭蕾舞課的途中，她受到攝影師赫爾曼·蘭德肖夫（Herman Landschoff）的妻子注意，並獲邀試拍照片。年僅15歲的她隨後登上美國版《Vogue》封面，從此展開模特兒生涯，逐步走入國際時尚界。

然而，成為模特兒並不意味著生活立刻改善。早年的工作收入有限，她仍與母親一起面對經濟壓力。據相關訪談記述，當時家中甚至沒有電話，《Vogue》需要派人前往她家通知工作安排。為了節省交通費，她有時會踩著溜冰鞋前往拍攝地點。對年少的卡門而言，模特兒工作不只是通往時尚世界的門票，也是幫助家庭維持生計的方式。

在隨後的歲月裡，卡門與攝影師歐文·佩恩（Irving Penn）、塞西爾．比頓（Cecil Beaton）及埃爾溫．布魯門菲爾德（Erwin Blumenfeld）等時尚攝影大師合作，逐漸建立起自己的風格。

★與郭培相遇：東方藝術與西方時尚的交會

中國高級訂制服裝設計師郭培，以精緻刺繡、華美面料與恢弘廓形聞名。她將中國傳統文化與當代時尚融合，從歷史、宮廷藝術與自然中汲取靈感，賦予服裝深厚的文化內涵。

2009年，卡門參與郭培《一千零二夜》（1002 Nights）系列時裝秀，身穿華麗的白色刺繡禮服。精湛工藝、戲劇性的造型與卡門從容有力的台步，共同展現了郭培設計的藝術魅力。

2017年，卡門再次身穿郭培的高級訂制服裝，為《傳奇》（Legend）系列巴黎時裝秀壓軸登場。年逾八旬的她，以成熟自信的姿態演繹紅色禮服的華麗氣勢，展現了超越年齡的時尚魅力。

兩人的合作超越了服裝本身。郭培以傳統工藝與當代設計，將東方文化帶上國際舞台；卡門則以歲月淬煉的優雅與力量，賦予作品獨特的生命力。

段合作也讓我們看見，文化交流不一定需要言語。有時，一件服裝、一場時裝秀，或一位模特兒的演繹，便能讓不同文化背景的人們產生共鳴，進一步理解彼此的藝術傳統。

★華美協進社     讓時尚成為文化交流的平台

卡門與中國時尚的聯繫，也體現在她與華美協進社的關係中。2017年，華美協進社與中國美麗慈善基金會（China Beauty Charity Fund）合作舉辦中國時尚盛典（China Fashion Gala），卡門獲頒時尚傳奇獎（Fashion Legacy Award。這場盛典將國際時尚人物、中國設計與文化交流聯繫起來，展現了中國時尚在國際舞台上的發展與影響力。

★讓美成為理解彼此的起點

回望卡門的職業生涯，她的影響力不僅來自登上多少封面、參與多少場時裝秀，更在於她不斷突破外界對年齡與女性形象的想像。她與郭培及靳羽西的合作，展現了東西方藝術如何透過服裝相互呼應；她獲得華美協進社表彰的經歷，則呈現了國際時尚人物與中美文化交流平台之間的聯繫。當她再次走上伸展台，燈光照亮的不只是身上的禮服，也照亮了不同文化相遇的可能性。從郭培的中國設計，到華美協進社搭建的文化交流平台，卡門的故事提醒我們：美可以跨越語言，藝術可以連結世界，而理解彼此，往往就從欣賞一件作品開始。

2023年，我有幸造訪北京玫瑰坊，並受到郭培親切接待。我們相去甚遠，也讓我更深刻體會到：美沒有國界，藝術能夠跨越文化與地域，連結世界。讓我們以「真、善、美」傳遞文化交流的價值與意義，共同祝福世界永續和平。

Growing Through Hardship

From Teenage Model to the World Stage

Born in New York City in 1931, Carmen Dell’Orefice experienced financial hardship during her childhood. Her path was far from easy. She initially dreamed of becoming a ballet dancer, but health problems forced her to abandon that ambition and seek a new direction in life.

In 1946, while on her way to a ballet class, Carmen caught the attention of the wife of photographer Herman Landschoff, who invited her to pose for photographs. At just 15, she appeared on the cover of American Vogue, launching a modeling career that would gradually take her onto the international fashion stage.

Yet becoming a model did not immediately ease her family’s financial difficulties. Her early earnings were modest, and she continued to face economic hardship alongside her mother. According to published interviews, the family did not even have a telephone, so Vogue had to send someone to their home to relay work assignments. To save on transportation costs, Carmen sometimes roller-skated to photo shoots. For the young model, the job was not merely a gateway to the fashion world; it was also a way to help support her family.

In the years that followed, Carmen worked with some of the most celebrated fashion photographers of her time, including Irving Penn, Cecil Beaton, and Erwin Blumenfeld. Through these collaborations, she gradually developed her own distinctive style.

Where Eastern Art Meets Western Fashion

Chinese haute couture designer Guo Pei is celebrated for her intricate embroidery, luxurious fabrics, and dramatic silhouettes. Her designs blend traditional Chinese culture with contemporary fashion, drawing inspiration from history, imperial art, and nature.

In 2009, Carmen walked in Guo Pei's 1002 Nights collection, wearing an elaborate white embroidered gown. The exquisite craftsmanship and Carmen’s graceful, commanding presence brought the artistic beauty of Guo Pei’s designs to life.

In 2017, Carmen returned to the runway in a Guo Pei creation, closing the designer's Legend collection in Paris. In her eighties, she wore a magnificent red gown with confidence and elegance, demonstrating that style and beauty transcend age.

Their collaboration went beyond fashion. Through traditional Chinese craftsmanship and contemporary design, Guo Pei brought Eastern culture to the international stage. Carmen, with her timeless elegance and strength, gave the creations a distinctive presence.

Their partnership shows that cultural exchange does not always require words. A garment, a runway show, or a model's interpretation can inspire curiosity and deepen appreciation for different artistic traditions.

Together, Carmen and Guo Pei offer a striking example of Eastern art meeting Western fashion.

Making Fashion a Platform for Cultural Exchange

Carmen's connection with Chinese fashion is also reflected in her relationship with China Institute of America.In 2017, China Institute partnered with the China Beauty Charity Fund to present the China Fashion Gala. Carmen received the Fashion Legacy Award. The event brought together international fashion figures, Chinese design, and cultural exchange, highlighting the growing presence and influence of Chinese fashion on the global stage

Letting Beauty Bring Us Closer

Looking back on Carmen's career, her influence goes beyond fashion. She has challenged conventional views of age and women's beauty.

Her collaboration with Guo Pei and Yue Sai Kan brought Eastern and Western art together through fashion, while her recognition by China Institute in America highlighted the link between international fashion and cultural exchange.Carmen's story reminds us that beauty transcends language, art connects cultures, and understanding often begins with appreciating a single creation.

In 2023, I had the privilege of visiting Rose Studio in Beijing, where I was warmly welcomed by Guo Pei herself. Our wonderful conversation deepened my understanding that beauty knows no borders and art has the power to transcend cultures and connect the world. May we share the values of truth, goodness, and beauty with the world, celebrate the importance of cultural exchange, and work together toward lasting world peace.
