【《We Chinese in AmericaMedia Editor Tang Zhao, August 6, 2022Yard, a British sustainable marketing agency, released an aviation data analysis report on July 29, "Celebrities with the Most Carbon Dioxide Emissions from Private Jets", among which the top three emissions are singer Taylor Swift, boxer Mayweather, Floyd Mayweather, and Jay-Z; but at least two people refuted the report, saying some ride data did not reflect its actual usage.  (Photo Credit: Variety)

The report comes as celebrities such as socialite Kylie Jenner and rapper Drake have been spotted flying on carbon-intensive private jets with as short a flight time as 17 and 14, respectively. Within minutes, it was immediately criticized by the public.

The report uses the Twitter account of Celebrity Jets, which tracks the movements of celebrity jets based on publicly available information; the report said the planes associated with celebrities emitted an average of more than 3,376 metric tons of carbon dioxide, about It is 480 times the annual emissions of the average person.

However, the Washington Post (WP) pointed out that the report has not been peer-reviewed, the report also includes disclaimers of analysis content and lists the names of many famous people.

According to the report, Swift is listed as the celebrity that produces the most carbon dioxide pollution this year. She has accumulated 170 flights since January, with a total emission of more than 8,293 metric tons, and the shortest flight time is only 36 minutes; the second is boxing. Mayweather Wang, who has emitted 7,076 metric tons of carbon dioxide so far this year, has a minimum flight time of 10 minutes.

The Post was unable to reach third-ranked Jay-Z, but Jay-Z's attorney told the Post that Jay-Z did not own the jet. Western music authority Rolling Stone reported that the aircraft data used in the analysis came from a Puma-related plane, and Jay-Z was included in the calculation because of his partnership with Puma.

A Swift spokesperson told The Washington Post: "Swift jets are often rented out to other people is clearly a big mistake in attributing most or all of the trips to Swift."

Mayweather did not respond.

The report's authors note that the purpose of the report is to highlight the impact of private jets. In addition to film and television celebrities, politicians, athletes, corporate executives and the rich often travel in private jets.

Peter DeCarlo, an environmental health scholar at Johns Hopkins University, said experts advise celebrities to think more about environmental shocks to avoid a cluster effect, which is not conducive to the current climate.

De Carlo points out that while the carbon footprint of celebrity private travel is high, it's still negligible compared to the big business aviation industry.

Rather than ban private jets, experts argue, regulations or policies should be sought to reduce non-essential travel.
