After leaving Afghanistan a year ago, Ajmal Rahmani thought he had found a haven of peace in Ukraine.

But this week, he must take his family on the road to escape again, this time to the rumble of Russian artillery shells to leave, ready to go to Poland.

Ramani told AFP shortly after entering Poland: "I dodged a war, fled to a country, and another war started, with bad luck."

As Ramani spoke to reporters, her 7-year-old daughter, Marwa, stood by, hugging her beige toy dog.

With Mawa, his wife Mina, and their 11-year-old son Omar, the Ramani family traveled thousands of miles, and the last 30 kilometers were even on foot. After some tossing, the family finally arrived at the border crossing of Medyka, Poland, where they and other refugees waited for a bus to the neighboring city of Przemysl.

This battle has been fought for 4 days. Hundreds of thousands of people have entered Poland, Hungary, Romania, and other countries to escape the flames. Most of the refugees are Ukrainians, but there are also students from Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, India, Nepal, and other places. and migrant workers.

Ramani, in his 40s, said he worked for NATO at Kabul airport in Afghanistan for 18 years, but was threatened after the U.S. evacuation four months ago because he was too worried about the safety of his children to let him. The child goes to school and finally decides to escape from his hometown.

Before that, Ramani said, "I lived happily in Afghanistan, with my own house, my own car, and a good salary."

Ramani said that to escape Afghanistan, "I sold my car, my house, all my belongings, and I have nothing", but "nothing is more important than my love and the life of my family".

It took him a long time to get a visa to leave Afghanistan, and he decided to come to Ukraine because he was the only place to accept him. The family finally settled in Odessa, a port city on the Black Sea, but another war came to them.

Four days ago, Russia began to invade Ukraine, and the Ramani family left everything behind again and trekked 1,100 kilometers to the border.

Polish authorities say nearly 213,000 people have entered Poland from Ukraine since the 24th. Like other refugees, the Ramani family, who did not have a Polish visa, now has 15 days to register, but with the number of refugees, it is impossible to complete the registration in such a short period of time.

Ramani said he felt the future was bleak, but he was encouraged by the warmth of the volunteers and Polish border officials assisting refugees. "They gave me strength."
