“We wanted to challenge the leadership of the Academy and the Defense Dept on their WOKE actions, CRT, Diversity training and the other discrepancies in the Academy. We found it pervasive at the Naval and Air Force Academies so we knew it was directed from the highest levels of our Military Leadership. We all want the Military to get back on track to training and leading our Armed Forces to secure America and its Citizens,”

The Concerned Graduates of  West Point and The Long Gray Line believe that there is a rejection of the principles of the military academy which could endanger its    original mission “to educate, train, and inspire the Corps of Cadets so that each graduate is a commissioned leader of character committed to the values of Duty, Honor, Country and prepared for a career of professional excellence and service to the Nation as an officer in the United States Army.”

They sent the letter in the hopes that authorities take heed of their advice regarding the problems that they have spotted.

The letter was sent to the Superintendent of the Academy as well as the President and Directors of the Association of Graduates (AOG), alleging that the West Point Academy is “conducting business in a manner that ignores time-honored principles of the Academy, Constitutional Law, and our sworn oath of office.”

“When you take away  time to teach a critical race theory and communist ideology, you’re taking away from the time that could be used for learning how to shoot better, how to operate airplanes better, take care of airplanes through maintenance; and even within the medical corps of the armed forces, it has affected many the doctors and nurses. So it’s a terrible thing. They need to stop it right now. They need to stop enforcing the mandates.”

Advice to patients

Patients who are taking Accupril should speak with their health care provider or pharmacy to determine whether they have the recalled product. Those who have the recalled medication should contact Sedgwick, a claims-management company, toll-free at 888-345-0481, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET for instructions on how to return the recalled tablets and receive reimbursement.

What are nitrosamines?

Long-term ingestion of Nnitroso-quinapril, a type of nitrosamine, may be associated with a potential increased cancer risk in humans. However, there is no immediate risk to patients taking the recalled medications, according to Pfizer.

Nitrosamines are present in water and foods such as cured and grilled meats, dairy products and vegetables. Although everyone is exposed to some level of nitrosamines, the FDA set an internationally recognized acceptable daily intake limit for the impurity. The FDA recommends that drugs containing levels above the acceptable daily intake limit be recalled by the manufacturer as appropriate.

A person taking a drug that contains nitrosamines at or below the acceptable daily limit every day for 70 years is not expected to have an increased cancer risk, according to the FDA.

DINING WITH ASIAN FOOD AND WINE: FIREWORKS OF JULY

By

Ronald Jan, M. D.

July 4th brings a celebration with fireworks in the United States. In Korea, the annual International Fireworks Festival is toward the end of July in Pohang at Yeongildae Beach. In 2004, Korean Global Steel Company began celebrating Pohang Citizen’s Day with the “Fireworks Festival”. It has grown into an international fireworks festival hosting a dialogue for Northeast Asian Nations (Russia, China, Japan, Mongolia, and Korea). To celebrate, we can match the fireworks with the explosion of flavors of the Korean BBQ at Paul Cho’s Blue House Korean BBQ in Sacramento.

Beef Bulgogi is thinly sliced beef (ribeye steak or flank steak) marinated for one hour in soy sauce, rice wine, sugar sesame oil, garlic, etc. then…grilled or pan-fried on high heat, caramelizing the sugar. Starch noodles & mushrooms are cooked in the slightly sweet and savory sauce then serve with thinly sliced scallions. The result: smoky, sweet, and savory.

Of course, Korean food is served with side dishes, called “banchan.”

But finding the right wine to complement Korean food can be a challenge, because of the many different flavors.  And so, it is best to select the wine based on the flavors and texture of the main dish - in this case, Beef Bulgogi rather than the flavors of the banchan.

In Sacramento, Due Vigne di Familia offers a Barbera with light, soft tannins which will soften even further with the fat and chewiness and umami flavors of the steak. And the Barbera brings enough acid to add freshness to the meal without being too heavy or earthy and the alcohol will help integrate the flavors and enhance the fruit flavors of red cherries and blackberries.

And so, this July in the midst of the fireworks, try the explosion of flavors with Korean BBQ and a nice wine to celebrate the summer.

【《We Chinese in America》Media Editor Tang Zhao, July 2, 2022Per County of San Diego Communications Office, every year, dozens of dogs end up at shelters after Fourth of July fireworks shows. (The festive pit bull is festooned for the Fourth of July holiday. Photo by Shutterstock.

If you’re lucky, your dog doesn’t react to the explosions and shrill whistles of fireworks set off to celebrate the holiday. But for some dogs and other pets, the sounds can be terrifying due to their sensitive ears.

Dogs kept outdoors or that are unleashed often escape yards in a panic, digging under, breaking through, or jumping over fences. In extreme cases, they can even break through window screens, gates or screen doors from inside to run. They are then at risk for running into traffic, getting lost, or even being attacked by other animals.

At this point, their best bet is to be picked up by a neighbor or an animal control officer for safekeeping until the owner can reclaim their pet.

“We suggest if your dog has a problem with loud noises or if you are not sure how your dog will react, it should be kept inside your home in the most noise-insulating room available to keep it secure and as calm as possible,” said County Animal Services Director Kelly Campbell. “As a backup plan, in case it still manages to run away, we recommend microchipping your pet.”

Pets that are microchipped and licensed are reunited with their owners much quicker than those that are not. If your dog is not microchipped, residents in the unincorporated areas can get their dogs microchipped for a $20 fee at the County’s two shelters in Carlsbad and Bonita by calling (619) 767-2675 for an appointment.

Some additional tips on how to protect your pet this Fourth of July:

  • Stay home with your dogs or have someone they like stay with them.
  • Do not take your pet to fireworks displays. Keep your pets indoors in a sheltered, quiet area.
  • Some dogs become destructive when frightened so remove dangerous objects your pet may chew.
  • If you can’t stay with them, leave a television or radio playing at normal volume to keep your pet company while you’re away.
  • Never leave pets outside unattended, even in a fenced yard. In their fear, pets that normally wouldn’t leave the yard may escape and get lost.
  • If you know your pet is seriously distressed by loud noises like thunder, consult your veterinarian to see if anxiety-relieving medication is appropriate.
  • Do not leave your pet in the car. With only hot air to breathe inside a car, your pet can suffer serious health effects, even death, within minutes.
  • If you are walking your dog near fireworks displays, be sure your pet is secured on a leash in case it tries to bolt.

If you find a lost pet in the unincorporated area of the County after the fireworks, call County Animal Services’ 24-hour emergency dispatch number at (619) 236-2341 so the animal can be cared for at the shelter. If you lose your pet, check the department’s lost and found page online.

If you see your dog is at County Animal Services, you can pick up your pet starting at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 5.

【《We Chinese in AmericaMedia Editor Tang Zhao, July 1, 2022Per County of San Diego Communications Office, on July 1, 2022, the County of San Diego will begin using a new beach water-safety category and signs at local beaches in its continuing efforts to educate and protect the public’s health. (Photo Courtesy: County of San Diego Communications Office)

The new “warning” category will join the existing advisory and closure categories. Warning signs will tell beachgoers that beach water may contain sewage and may cause illness if people come into contact with it. With transboundary south swell conditions expected this Fourth of July weekend, warning signs may be posted at South County beaches.

Here are the category differences:

Advisory Category

An advisory sign is posted for awareness for beachgoers when test results exceed State health standards, but no known sewage conditions exist, and water is not moving from south to north. When an advisory is posted, it means people have a higher chance of getting sick based on testing levels of contaminated water.

New Warning Category

A warning sign will be posted for beachgoers when testing exceeds State health standards AND south swell (transboundary flow) ocean conditions are pushing waters from the south to the north. A warning indicates that even though sewage impacts are not verified, sewage may be in the water due to the south swell  conditions. Warnings will help people make their own decisions about whether to enter recreational waters. Previously, test results and a south swell would have resulted in a beach closure.

Closure Category

Beach closures are issued if there are known sewage impacts. This means it is known for sure there is sewage in the water, and to protect the public’s health, State law requires the closure of affected beaches. Closures follow reported sewage spills, or when the Tijuana River is flowing and reaching recreational waters, or when County environmental health experts verify sewage odors or water discoloration reported by lifeguards, beach managers, and/or surfers/swimmers.

The new warning category will be implemented through the end of September to evaluate how well it serves the public and our communities.

No Signs

No signs posted? No need to worry, just enjoy the beach!

County officials encourage residents and visitors to learn more about water quality conditions and risks by using the QR code on posted beach signs or by visiting sdbeachinfo.com for more information.

In May, the County became the first coastal county in the United States to start using rapid, DNA-based water quality testing technology (ddPCR) that produces faster results.  This technique came after nearly 10 years of testing, pilot programs, and working with federal, state and local agencies.

You can learn more about each of these beach water quality management categories on DEHQ’s popular “Check in Before You Get In” website.
