Children from six months to five years old are a group of people in the United States who have not yet been able to receive the new COVID - 19 vaccine. Children's sheltering at home affects the normal work and rest of families, and also makes parents worry that young children may be seriously infected with the epidemic.
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) official in charge of the new COVID – 19 vaccine program, Peter Marks, said that parents should rest assured that their children will be vaccinated by Pfizer or Moderna.
Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine for young children
Pfizer's three-dose children's vaccine can be given to young children between the ages of six months and four years, with a three-week interval between the first and second doses and at least an eight-week interval between the second and third doses.
The dose varies according to the age of the child, ranging from three micrograms (μg or mcg) or 0.03 milliliters (mL) per dose for children under four years of age, 20 micrograms or 0.2 milliliters per dose for children five to 11 years of age, and 30 micrograms or 0.2 milliliters per dose for adolescents and adults. micrograms or 0.3 ml.
Pfizer's research and development staff said that the overall efficacy of the vaccine against mild symptoms in children under five years of age is about 80%, but the research object was only 10 diagnosed children.
According to the Washington Post report, Pfizer said that if only two doses of the childhood vaccine were given, it was only 28% effective in children six months to four years old; the FDA said the vaccine was less effective for infants six months to 23 months old.
Covid-19 vaccine for young children in Modena
Modena's two-dose childhood vaccine can be vaccinated in young children between the ages of six months and five years, with the first and second doses separated by four weeks at a dose of 0.125 milliliters or 25 micrograms; the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the first and second doses of the vaccine are 0.5 ml or 100 micrograms, and the booster injection is 0.25 ml or 50 micrograms.
Moderna said the efficacy of childhood vaccines varied by age, ranging from 51 percent between six months to one year of age and 37 percent between two and five years of age.
The Washington Post reported that Modena was testing a third booster shot for children.

Abir Sultan Photo Pool)

【《We Chinese in America》Media Editor Tang Zhao,June20, 2022】As an ongoing effort to enhance our valuable service to We Chinese in America website readers, We Chinese in America website posts English and Chinese versions of “IRS News Release” , “IRS Fact Sheets”, and “tax tips” directly received from IRS Media Relations Office in Washington, D.C.. IRS expands voice bot options for faster service, less wait time
Assistance for eligible taxpayers in setting up or modifying payment plans now available; more functions planned in 2022 to help taxpayers obtain account information
IR-2022-127, June 17, 2022
WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Service today announced expanded voice bot options to help eligible taxpayers easily verify their identity to set up or modify a payment plan while avoiding long wait times.
"This is part of a wider effort at the IRS to help improve the experience of taxpayers," said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig. "We continue to look for ways to better assist taxpayers, and that includes helping people avoid waiting on hold or having to make a second phone call to get what they need. The expanded voice bots are another example of how technology can help the IRS provide better service to taxpayers."
Voice bots run on software powered by artificial intelligence, which enables a caller to navigate an interactive voice response. The IRS has been using voice bots on numerous toll-free lines since January, enabling taxpayers with simple payment or notice questions to get what they need quickly and avoid waiting. Taxpayers can always speak with an English- or Spanish-speaking IRS telephone representative if needed.
Eligible taxpayers who call the Automated Collection System (ACS) and Accounts Management toll-free lines and want to discuss payment plan options can authenticate or verify their identities through a personal identification number (PIN) creation process. Setting up a PIN is easy: Taxpayers will need their most recent IRS bill and some basic personal information to complete the process.
"To date, the voice bots have answered over 3 million calls. As we add more functions for taxpayers to resolve their issues, I anticipate many more taxpayers getting the service they need quickly and easily," said Darren Guillot, IRS Deputy Commissioner of Small Business/Self Employed Collection & Operations Support.
Additional voice bot service enhancements are planned in 2022 that will allow authenticated individuals (taxpayers with established or newly created PINs) to get:
- Account and return transcripts.
- Payment history.
- Current balance owed.
In addition to the payment lines, voice bots help people who call the Economic Impact Payment (EIP) toll-free line with general procedural responses to frequently asked questions. The IRS also added voice bots for the Advance Child Tax Credit toll-free line in February to provide similar assistance to callers who need help reconciling the credits on their 2021 tax return.
The IRS also reminds taxpayers about numerous other available self-service options.

【《We Chinese in America》Media Editor Tang Zhao, June 20, 2022】Per County of San Diego Communications Office, the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency has identified an additional probable case of hMPXV, also known as human monkeypox, bringing the total probable case count in the region to three. (Photo credit: County of San Diego Communications Office)
All probable cases must be verified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and that process can take several days. The two prior probable cases reported by the County on Wednesday have not been verified by the CDC yet.
County health officials say this most recent case has no connection or relation to the first two probable cases, but like the other two, the individual also recently traveled internationally.
Currently, the individual is in isolation and although symptomatic, the patient is doing well and is not hospitalized.
“All three individuals with probable cases of hMPXV here in the region are doing well and are managing their symptoms in home isolation,” said Wilma J. Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “Most individuals who become infected experience mild to moderate symptoms and the risk of contracting the virus remains very low for the general population.”
Going forward, the County will provide weekly updates on the hMPXV situation in the region on Fridays. The County’s hMPXV website will be updated by 5 p.m. each Friday, excluding holidays.
As of Friday, the CDC has confirmed 113 hMPXV cases in 20 states and the District of Columbia, with California (24), New York (21) and Illinois (15) seeing the largest number of cases.
About hMPXV
hMPXV, or human monkeypox is a viral infection that can spread through contact with body fluids, sores on the body of someone who has hMPXV, or shared items (e.g., clothing and bedding) that have been contaminated with fluids from sores of a person with hMPXV.
The disease can also spread between people through saliva or respiratory droplets, typically between people in a close setting. Although hMPXV is not generally considered a sexually transmitted disease, it can be transmitted during sex through skin-to-skin and other intimate contact, regardless of gender or sexual orientation.
The virus is not known to linger in the air and is not transmitted during short periods of shared airspace.
Cases of hMPXV have previously been identified in travelers from, or residents of, countries in western and central Africa, where the disease is considered to be endemic. Since May 2022, hMPXV cases have been reported in several non-endemic countries, including the United States. No deaths have been reported.
hMPXV Symptoms
Symptoms of hMPXV are similar to, but milder than, the signs and symptoms of smallpox. They include:
- Fever
- Headache
- Muscle aches
- Backache
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Chills
- Exhaustion
A rash usually develops within 1 to 3 days after the appearance of fever. The rash often begins on the face and then spreads to other parts of the body.
Most people who develop hMPXV experience symptoms 7 to 14 days (and up to 21 days) after exposure.
The majority of people who become infected have a mild illness that improves without treatment over 2 to 4 weeks. hMPXV is contagious and can spread to others until scabs have fallen off and a new layer of skin has formed.
What People Should Do
Anyone who thinks they may have symptoms of hMPXV, including unusual rashes or lesions, should contact a healthcare provider right away. Cover the area of the rash with clothing, wear a mask and avoid skin-to-skin or close contact with others until the symptoms are medically evaluated.

[《We Chinese in America》Media Editor Tang Zhao, June19, 2022】Per County of San Diego Communications Office, children under 5 years of age are the only group that is not eligible to get a COVID-19 vaccine. (Photo credit: County of San Diego Communications Office)
The situation is likely to change soon if the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Western States committee approve Moderna’s vaccine for children ages 6 months to 5 years and Pfizer’s for children ages 6 months to 4 years.
If that occurs, San Diego County children in those age groups will be able to get vaccinated at their pediatrician’s office, community clinics and some retail pharmacies.
“While children have not been as susceptible to COVID-19, it’s important that they, too, are vaccinated to keep them from getting sick and passing the virus to others,” said Wilma J. Wooten. M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “Some parents have been eagerly anticipating the COVID vaccine for their younger kids. They should make an appointment to get them vaccinated as soon as possible.”
Smaller Doses for Younger Kids
The vaccines for children this age would be given in much smaller doses. The Pfizer vaccine would be given in three shots, each containing one tenth of an adult dose. The first two doses would be given three weeks apart and the final shot at least three months later.
The Moderna vaccine, which currently is only available for adults, is also likely to be approved for two more age groups: children between 6 and 17 years of age and those under 6. The Moderna shot for kids under 6 is a two-dose series, given about four weeks apart. Each dose contains one quarter of the adult dose.
Both the Pfizer and Moderna shots for kids under 6 are given with smaller needles and, most times, it is administered in the leg.
Everyone 5 years and older can get a vaccine and boosters at no cost. Parental consent is required for all eligible minors to be vaccinated.
Vaccination Progress:
- Received at least one shot: More than 2.97 million or 94.4% of San Diegans age 5 and older are at least partially vaccinated.
- Fully vaccinated: Over 2.63 million or 83.6%.
- Boosters administered: 1,358,992 or 58.7% of 2,316,581 eligible San Diegans.
- More vaccination information can be found at coronavirus-sd.com/vaccine.
Deaths:
- Three additional deaths were reported since the last report on June 9. The region’s total is 5,318.
- Of those three additional deaths, two were men and one was a woman. They died between June 9, 2022 and June 11, 2022; the three deaths occurred in the past week.
- Two of the people who died were 80 years or older and one was in their 70s.
- Two of the people who died were fully vaccinated and one was not.
- All three had underlying medical conditions
Cases, Case Rates, Hospitalizations and Testing:
- 4,003 COVID-19 cases were reported to the County in the past three days (June 13 – June 15, 2022). The region’s total is now 813,035.
- 9,672cases were reported in the past week (June 9 through June 15) compared to 10,370 infections identified the previous week (June 2-June 8).
- San Diego County’s case rate per 100,000 residents 12 years of age and older is 42.13 for people fully vaccinated and boosted, 25.06 for fully vaccinated people and 75.59 for not fully vaccinated San Diegans.
- 12,412 tests were reported to the County on June 11, and the percentage of new positive cases was 11% (Data through June 11).
- The 14-day rolling percentage of positive cases, among tests reported through June 11, is 10.7%.
