xtreme heat is expected at the coast and inland valleys of San Diego County this Labor Day weekend and into early next week. The National Weather Service in San Diego has issued anSan Diegans need to stay informed and protect themselves to prevent heat-related illness and to avoid hospitalization. Holiday weekends are a traditionally busy time in emergency departments. Dangerous heat conditions can add to the volume of people visiting the ED and strain hospital staff and resources.
“Check weather forecasts, stay hydrated, limit time outdoors, check on elderly or disabled neighbors, and visit Cool Zones,” said Wilma J. Wooten, M.D. M.P.H., County public health officer. “Signs of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea or vomiting, clammy skin and muscle cramps. Heatstroke symptoms include fever, flushed or red skin, lack of sweating, trouble breathing and disorientation or confusion.”
A list of Cool Zones locations is available online. People can enter their address once they navigate to the map and it will show locations near them. Residents can also call 2-1-1 to find a location.
On Monday, three libraries will open Cool Zone community rooms from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The three library branches are Ramona, 1275 Main St, Ramona, CA 92065; Borrego Springs, 2580 Country Club Rd, Borrego Springs, CA 92004; and Valley Center: 29200 Cole Grade Rd, Valley Center, CA 92082. Please note that regular library services will not be available.
Prolonged heat with little relief at night can pose a substantial health risk for young children, the elderly, people with chronic diseases, pregnant individuals, people with disabilities, and people who are socially isolated. Family pets are also vulnerable to the extreme heat. County health officials offer the following tips:
- Stay in an air-conditioned area during the hottest hours of the day.
- Wear light, loose-fitting clothing.
- Drink plenty of water (avoid alcohol and sugary drinks) and don’t wait until you are thirsty.
- Take cool showers.
- Never leave a child, elderly person, or pet unattended in a car.
- Avoid unnecessary hard work or activities outside during the hottest part of the day.
- Avoid unnecessary sun exposure and wear a wide-brim hat if you need to be in the sun.
- Avoid using the oven to cook.
- Avoid being out during peak heat hours.
- Pet owners can exercise their pets in early morning hours or early evening to avoid prolonged exposure to the heat. Make sure they have shade throughout the day and plenty of water.
- Even a few hours spent in air conditioning can help your body stay cooler.
- Do not rely on electric fans for cooling if temperatures exceed 90 degrees.
People in San Diego County unable to get to a Cool Zone location without transportation assistance, such as older adults, people with disabilities, or people who are homebound, can call 2-1-1 to be connected to a transportation or rideshare service at no cost.
If someone is showing signs of heat-related illness, call 9-1-1 and begin cooling the individual by:
- Moving them to a shaded area
- Spraying with cool water and fanning them
- Placing them in a cool shower if they are alert
- Monitoring the body temperature, and continuing cooling efforts, and
- Do not give the victim fluids to drink

Dine with Asian Food and Wine – September 2022
Dine with Asian Food and Wine - Mid-Autumn Festival

The Fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month commonly falls in mid-September (in 2022 this will be on September 10th by the Gregorian Calendar). Typically, this is the day when the moon is full and very bright heralding the annual Moon Festival (aka Mid-Autumn Festival). The festival likely began as a harvest festival and evolved into the Moon Festival celebrating Hou Yi’s wife, Chang’e, who drank the elixir of eternal life and then ascended to the moon where she resides. Moon cakes in their round form symbolize completeness and reunion of the family. The spirit of such unity is represented in the presentation of mooncakes to family members and to close friends.

Mooncakes are typically filled with doh sah sweet red bean paste and other ingredients such as duck egg yolk. With this lightly sweet dessert the wines which are also only lightly sweet should accompany well without overpowering the doh sah moon cake.

Such wine is Vino Noceto’s Frivolo, a sparkling muscat made in the Asti Method. The wine is lightly sweet and sparkling with acid to balance the sweetness while the acid with the bubbles brings freshness to the mooncake without overpowering with excessive sweetness.

With this year’s Moon Festival, share the Moon Cakes with friends and family while enjoying a lightly sweet dessert wine. Happy Mid-Autumn Festival!

【《We Chinese in America》Media Editor Tang Zhao, August 31, 2022】Per County of San Diego Communications Office, The National Weather Services has issued a prolonged heat wave through Labor Day and that creates an elevated fire risk. (Photo credit: County of San Diego Communications Office)
County emergency officials are offering the following tips to reduce the fire risk.
People are asked to avoid using power tools to clear away brush because it can spark a fire.
People interested in protecting their property from the threat of brush fires can instead do these things:
- Remove debris, including dried leaves, firewood stacks, or trash from around the home. This includes leaves on their roof and in gutters.
- Trim away any tree branches that overhang on your home and cut low branches on trees without using power tools.
- Dried out bushes or plants should also be pruned or removed.
- All tree or shrub clippings need to be cleaned up and disposed of in a bin.
People can also prevent accidentally starting a brush fire by heeding these warnings:
- Be particularly careful with smoking materials to avoid accidentally starting a fire.
- Never pull your vehicle over in grass as it can ignite a grass fire. Make sure your vehicle is well maintained as faulty catalytic converters have been a major cause of accidental fires in San Diego County.
- Also, if you have a trailer on your vehicle, make sure the chains don’t drag on the ground while driving and spark a fire.
In the event of a fire, people should be informed of the situation and any emergency notifications:
- Make sure you’re registered for AlertSanDiego, the County’s cell phone notification service. By doing that, you will receive any emergency messages that apply to your neighborhood on your cell phone.
- Download the County’s SD Emergency appon your smart phone from the Google Play store or the Apple App Store. The app provides news updates, maps, shelter locations and includes disaster planning templates and interactive checklists. If a regional emergency, such as a wildfire, does occur, updates and other information will be posted at sdcountyemergency.com and sent out via the app.
- Complete a family disaster plan template from the app or rom ReadySanDiego.orgto help your family plan for an emergency including where to meet if you are separated and cannot return home. The site has more information about safeguarding your home from wildfires and general disaster preparation.
