【《We Chinese in AmericaMedia Editor Tang Zhao, August 31, 2022Per County of San Diego Communications Office, The National Weather Services has issued a prolonged heat wave through Labor Day and that creates an elevated fire risk. (Photo credit: County of San Diego Communications Office)

County emergency officials are offering the following tips to reduce the fire risk.

People are asked to avoid using power tools to clear away brush because it can spark a fire.

People interested in protecting their property from the threat of brush fires can instead do these things:

  • Remove debris, including dried leaves, firewood stacks, or trash from around the home. This includes leaves on their roof and in gutters.
  • Trim away any tree branches that overhang on your home and cut low branches on trees without using power tools.
  • Dried out bushes or plants should also be pruned or removed.
  • All tree or shrub clippings need to be cleaned up and disposed of in a bin.

People can also prevent accidentally starting a brush fire by heeding these warnings:

  • Be particularly careful with smoking materials to avoid accidentally starting a fire.
  • Never pull your vehicle over in grass as it can ignite a grass fire. Make sure your vehicle is well maintained as faulty catalytic converters have been a major cause of accidental fires in San Diego County.
  • Also, if you have a trailer on your vehicle, make sure the chains don’t drag on the ground while driving and spark a fire.

In the event of a fire, people should be informed of the situation and any emergency notifications:

  • Make sure you’re registered for AlertSanDiego, the County’s cell phone notification service. By doing that, you will receive any emergency messages that apply to your neighborhood on your cell phone.
  • Download the County’s SD Emergency appon your smart phone from the Google Play store or the Apple App Store. The app provides news updates, maps, shelter locations and includes disaster planning templates and interactive checklists. If a regional emergency, such as a wildfire, does occur, updates and other information will be posted at sdcountyemergency.com and sent out via the app.
  • Complete a family disaster plan template from the app or rom ReadySanDiego.orgto help your family plan for an emergency including where to meet if you are separated and cannot return home. The site has more information about safeguarding your home from wildfires and general disaster preparation.

【《We Chinese in AmericaMedia Editor Tang Zhao, August 29, 2022China’s Record Drought Is Drying Rivers and Feeding Its Coal Habit. Dry weather in southwestern China has crippled huge hydroelectric dams, forcing cities to impose rolling blackouts and driving up the country’s use of coal. The heat wave has scorched China for more than two months. In Chongqing, a sprawling metropolis of around 20 million people, the temperature soared to 113 degrees last week, the first time such a high reading had been recorded in a Chinese city outside the western desert region of Xinjiang. Car assembly plants and electronics factories in southwestern China have closed for lack of power. Factories owned by Foxconn, Toyota and Volkswagen have curtailed production or closed for lack of power. Owners of electric cars are waiting overnight at charging stations to recharge their vehicles.  In Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, several neighborhoods went without electricity for more than 10 hours a day. Rivers are so low there that ships can no longer carry supplies.

A record-setting drought and an 11-week heat wave are causing broad disruption in a region that depends on dams for more than three-quarters of its electricity generation. The factory shutdowns and logistical delays are hindering China’s efforts to revive its economy as the country’s leader, Xi Jinping, prepares to claim a third term in power this autumn.

The ruling Communist Party is already struggling to reverse a slowdown in China, the world’s second largest economy, caused by the country’s strict Covid lockdowns and a slumping real estate market. Young people are finding it hard to get jobs, while uncertainty over the economic outlook is compelling residents to save instead of spend, and to hold off on buying new homes.

Now, the extreme heat is adding to frustration by snarling power supplies, threatening crops and setting off wildfires. China’s extreme weather has potential implications for the world’s efforts to halt climate change. Beijing has sought to offset at least part of the lost hydropower from the drought by ramping up the use of coal-fired power plants. Customs data shows that the country’s imports of coal from Russia reached a new high last month. China is a large contributor to air pollution and to greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming.

【《We Chinese in America》Media Editor Tang Zhao, August 30, 2022Last Thursday, Facebook founder and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg told Joe Rogan on his podcast that the FBI warned Facebook prior to the 2020 election not to spread alleged Russian disinformation in association with a New York Post story about Hunter Biden's laptop. It led to a "meaningful" decrease in the story appearing on users' news feeds within the final week of the election campaign, according to Zuckerberg. (Photo Credit: Saloon.com)

Zuckerberg's comments aren't completely new but shed more light into what he testified on October 28, 2020, before the Senate Commerce Committee. Zuckerberg testified that the FBI instructed Facebook to be "on high alert and sensitivity...if a trove of documents appeared, that we should view that with suspicion, that it might be part of a foreign manipulation attempt."

Republican Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin has made new allegations about Hunter Biden, saying the "FBI cannot be trusted with the handling of Hunter Biden's laptop" due to new whistleblower information he allegedly received.

Johnson originally asked Zuckerberg about the laptop at the aforementioned Senate hearing, asking the CEO whether the FBI made contact about the Hunter Biden story. Zuckerberg said the FBI did not mention "that story specifically" and said Facebook "didn't censor the content."

"We flagged it for fact-checkers to review, and pending that review, we temporarily constrained its distribution to make sure that it didn't spread wildly while it was being reviewed," Zuckerberg said. "But it's not up to us either to determine whether it's Russian interference, nor whether it's true. We rely on the FBI intelligence and fact-checkers to do that."

Dave Arnold, spokesperson for Meta, referred Newsweek to a series of tweets responding to the criticism of Zuckerberg—which stated in part that Facebook "lifted the demotion" of the story after seven days when it wasn't rated false by independent fact-checkers.

【《We Chinese in America》Media Editor Tang Zhao, August 28, 2022On Wednesday, a jury awarded Bryant $16 million after she sued L.A. County over the leaked images of the bodies of Kobe Bryant, their daughter Gianna Bryant and other victims of the fatal January 2020 helicopter crash. Her lawyer, Luis Li, said on Thursday, per The Los Angeles Times that she plans to give the verdict award to the Mamba and Mambacita Sports Foundation, a nonprofit that continues Kobe and Gianna's legacies by offering opportunities to underprivileged young athletes.

In a statement to PEOPLE on the verdict, Li says, "From the beginning, Vanessa Bryant has sought only accountability, but our legal system does not permit her to force better policies, more training or officer discipline."

He adds, "Those measures are the responsibility of the sheriff's and fire departments — responsibilities that Mrs. Bryant's efforts have exposed as woefully deficient, even giving amnesty to the wrongdoers."

He goes on to salute Vanessa, 40, stating that she "never faltered, even when the county attempted to force her to submit to an involuntary psychiatric examination."

Li says that Vanessa is "deeply grateful" to "Good Samaritans" Ralph Mendez and Luella Weireter, "who brought to light the decades-old practice of taking and sharing photos of accident and crime victims for no legitimate purpose."

As Vanessa's 11-week trial ended, her co-plaintiff Chris Chester, who tragically lost his wife Sarah and their 13-year-old daughter Payton in the crash, was also awarded $15 million.

Reacting to the verdict, Vanessa was seen sobbing in court. While holding her head down, Vanessa had both of her hands together as if she was in prayer during the moment. She hugged her attorney Luis Li for a few minutes before hugging Chris.
